Crypto gaming startup Proof of Play has closed a $33 million seed round led by a16z and Greenoaks, with participation from Mercury, Firebase, Zynga, and Alchemy.

Proof of Play, co-founded by FarmVille co-creator Amitt Mahajan, aims to create fun and accessible blockchain games. Its first social role-playing game, called Pirate Nation, was released in beta last December, in which players can battle, craft, trade, and quest in search of the digital token labeled PGLD for Pirate Gold.

The game is said to have been created by veterans of leading tech and entertainment companies like Epic Games, Zynga, EA, Riot Games, Activision, Google, Facebook, Disney and Warner Bros.
