Sega Distances Itself from Blockchain Games as COO Claims Play-to-Earn Games 'Boring'

Japan's gaming giant Sega is distancing itself from blockchain games and GameFi, as the company has doubts over the future of the sector, Bloomberg reports.

Shuji Utsumi, co-COO of Sega, said in an interview that the company will withhold its biggest franchises from third-party blockchain gaming projects to avoid devaluing its content. Meanwhile, Sega is shelving plans to develop its own blockchain games. Utsumi said,

"The action in play-to-earn games is boring. What's the point if games are no fun?"

"We're looking into whether this technology is really going to take off in this industry, after all," he added.

Sega will still offer its lesser franchises to blockchain gaming projects, and will continue to invest in the field. According to Utsumi, Sega remains open to getting more involved in blockchain games as the technology matures.
